Is it worth overpaying for brake pads and discs? What the test showed
Are there any significant differences between expensive brake pads and their cheaper counterparts? Today I will tell you about the results of tests that, I think, will help you decide whether to overpay by purchasing a more expensive one a spare part in the hope of getting higher quality, and consequently improved performance.
The test was performed on a VAZ 2110 car. AVTOVAZ's new brake discs and pads were selected for testing. First the standard ones, such as as they put it from the Assembly line, and then a little more expensive – sports.
It will be possible to understand the effectiveness of their work after measuring the braking distance and the heating temperature of the disc after multiple emergency operation of the brakes. I think this data should answer the question of whether the installation is appropriate sports pads and discs with perforations (have more efficient cooling).
Disks and pads: a little bit about the test participants
Both discs are ventilated, they have special holes in the thickness, but the plane of the sports model has additional grooves and holes.
Pads also differ in performance, on the sports model there is some paint, most likely intended for additional heat dissipation. In addition, the appearance of the friction material also differs – in standard cases it is shiny, and in sports it is matte.
The result of testing in the field
After installing a set of new pads and disks on the car, we left for trial runs. However before making a test on the road to the site where the control test will be, lapped, periodically slowing down while driving. It will also happen with the other set so that they are on a level playing field.
It was decided to run the tests at a standard speed of 60 km / h, and in such a way that the disc would not lock completely and that the pads would RUB against the disc during a stop. The line from which the braking should have occurred was marked with paint and traffic cones. At the end of the stopping distance of each race, marks were also made.
A total of 6 brake tests were performed, after each one the braking distance was measured.
Stock pads with disks showed the following results:
- 1 – 24 m;
- 2 – 26 m;
- 3 – 30 m;
- 4 – 34 m;
- 5 – 36 m;
- 6 – 41 m.
After such a test, the brake system is fairly heated, I would even say overheated, since on arrival already already in the garage, for replacement a set of discs with pads, the temperature on the surface of the brake disc was 250 degrees. Strong overheating was noticeable and the color of the surface, there was a scale!
In addition, it felt like the braking was getting worse each time, the pedal on the sixth race and even began to beat when braking, and the disks were bursting with heat. The friction surface of the pads began to rise and be painted!
The sports brake model showed much better results:
Immediately after the test ends, the temperature is set to zero. the temperature was 204 degrees. That is, they are much better at removing heat. Actually, the difference in braking was also very noticeable, because even on the 4th race, the braking distance was the same as in the stock version on the third, and on the 6th test was even a meter less than in the previous one The 5th floor.
When disassembling, it became clear that the pads retained their appearance. They showed no signs of damage, as was the case with standard pads, and the surface of the disc itself was not affected such significant changes as in the previous case, warming up occurred only to yellow, and not blue.
Also, the first disk was cooled down under an intense flow of cold air for an hour and a half, this time the car just had to stand on the street for a few minutes, and the disk itself cooled down to the temperature at which it can be touched with your hands without fear of getting burned.
Thus, we can draw the following conclusion: standard disks only last for a short time, and they are only used for a short period of time. at high speeds and when heating up (which happens quite quickly), there are certain problems with braking. There are no similar problems with the sports version..
Therefore, it can be argued that the car owner, paying extra for higher-quality pads and disks, may well count on improved braking performance. And if you have a predominating aggressive driving, then you simply have to put sports brakes!
